Jasprit Bumrah’s Historic Performance in Brisbane

Jasprit Bumrah dazzled with a six-wicket haul in the Brisbane Test, becoming the second Indian bowler to take 50 wickets on Australian soil. He broke Kapil Dev’s special record, which includes the most five-wicket hauls in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries.

Brisbane: The five-match Test series between India and Australia is tied at 1-1, and Jasprit Bumrah is in phenomenal form. In the first innings of the third Test in Brisbane, the right-arm pacer wreaked havoc by taking five wickets on Day 2 and dismissing Mitchell Starc on Day 3 to claim another milestone in Test cricket.

By claiming six wickets in the first innings, Bumrah became only the second Indian bowler after Kapil Dev to take 50 wickets in Australia.

On the Verge of Breaking Kapil Dev’s Record in Brisbane

At 31 years of age, Bumrah has taken 50 wickets in just 19 innings, with an impressive bowling strike rate of 42.82. Kapil Dev holds the record for the most Test wickets in Australia by an Indian, with 51 wickets at an average of 24.58 and a strike rate of 61.50. With just two more wickets, Bumrah is set to surpass Kapil Dev’s record.

Breaking Another Kapil Dev Record on Day 2

On Day 2 of the Brisbane Test, Bumrah overtook Kapil Dev’s record for the most five-wicket hauls in SENA countries. Bumrah now has eight five-wicket hauls in these countries, surpassing Kapil Dev’s tally of seven.


Earlier in the series, Bumrah became the third Indian to take over 50 Test wickets in a calendar year, following Kapil Dev (twice, in 1979 and 1983) and Zaheer Khan (2002). In 2024, Bumrah has been exceptional across formats, taking 73 wickets in 20 matches at a strike rate of 26.6, including four five-wicket hauls.
