Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have a solid opening pair in Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. However, Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer, believes that a newly acquired player may not fit well into the team’s plans for IPL 2025.
“A Problem at the Top”
Chopra highlighted that SRH’s decision to buy Ishan Kishan for ₹11.25 crore during the IPL 2025 auction could create a challenge. Kishan, primarily known for his aggressive opening style and ability to capitalize on powerplay restrictions, might have to bat out of position due to SRH’s already settled openers.
SRH has built a strong squad for the upcoming season, boasting explosive batting depth and some quality new acquisitions. Among them, Ishan Kishan stands out as the marquee buy after fierce bidding from multiple teams. While the team is likely to slot Kishan at No. 3, Chopra believes his effectiveness diminishes when he isn’t opening.
“I see a problem at the top. None of us thought SRH would go after Ishan Kishan, but they did. Now, he’ll have to bat out of position as Hyderabad already has two openers,” Chopra remarked.
He also pointed out that Kishan underperformed for Mumbai Indians in previous seasons, raising further questions about SRH’s decision to secure him despite having a settled opening combination.
Will SRH’s gamble on Kishan pay off, or will their strategy backfire? Only time will tell as the IPL 2025 season unfolds.
